What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you put yourself down or are you satisfied? Body image is how you see and feel about your physical appearance.
As early as first grade, children report concerns and preoccupation with weight and body shape. With regard to girls, 80% of girls in grade three through six report bad feelings about their bodies. Girls are often overly concerned with body shape and weight judging themselves by their looks, appearance and level of thinness. 25% of elementary school age boys are dissatisfied with their bodies. Boys are often concerned with the size and strength of their body. Since 1998, the use of anabolic steroids has increased 50% among youth in an effort to achieve unrealistic body image standards.
Children with negative thoughts about their bodies frequently report feelings of depression, insecurity, and anxiety. Also, they are prone to eating disorders. Here are some tips to help your children develop a healthy body image:
1. Focus on INNER strengths, not on appearance. List three inner qualities you like the best about yourself. Think of two more qualities you want to develop.
2. Accept that your body is growing. Its shape, weight and height will be different with each stage.
3. Stop the negative “self talk”, such as “I’m too tall” or “I’m not tall enough”. Instead, compliment yourself.
4. Eat a well balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. Skipping meals deprives growing bodies of necessary nutrients.
5. Exercise regularly in an enjoyable way, regardless of size.
6. Think critically about unrealistic media messages.
7. Create a list of people you admire who have contributed to your life or the world. Was their appearance important to their success and accomplishment?
Remember, we can’t always change the way we look, but we can change the way we think about how we look.

Manzano Day School's Founder - Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms
We will celebrate Founder’s Day on April 5 at an all-school assembly.
Manzano Day school was founded by a very interesting woman of vision and leadership. Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms started Manzano Day School because she was concerned what kind of an education her daughter and her friends’ daughters would receive in the “wilds” of New Mexico. Her goal was to prepare students for higher education and lifelong learning. In September 1938, Mrs. Simms opened the doors to Manzano Day School which was located at 1425 Central in a building called Huning Castle. There were 38 students and 3 faculty members. Grades were from K through 7th. Tuition was $7.00 a month for K and $10.00 a month for other grades.
In 1941 Mrs. Simms found and purchased La Glorieta which was once a Spanish hacienda. The first inhabitants of this property were in 1662. During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers used La Glorieta for their headquarters. The hacienda was owned by several families before it became Manzano Day School. Two of its residents, Harvey and Erna Ferguson became well known authors. Much of La Glorieta has been renovated with the help of many Manzano Day School parents and friends and is on the National Register of Historic Places. La Glorieta is considered the heart of Manzano Day School.
Mrs. Simms passed away in 1944 but her efforts in education still exist today with the ever growing Manzano Day School. She believed in and supported quality education for the young. She would be happy to know that Joy in Learning® is still celebrated at our school and that Manzano Day School continues to expand on her original vision of preparing students for the future.
