Nurse's Notes

The single, most important action to stay healthy and stop the spread of germs is to wash your hands and wash them often (Centers for Disease Control).  Studies show that children who wash their hands at least 4 times a day have a 50% decrease of illness.  Here is how it works:  Germs live on surfaces.  If you touch a surface, like a doorknob, desk, or pencil, the germ is now on your hand.  Then, if you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, the germ enters your body and you may get sick.  This is called “cross contamination”.  One way to help decrease cross contamination is to NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE or PUT YOUR HANDS IN YOUR MOUTH while at school.  Also, be sure to wash your hands during these times:

  1. After you sneeze, cough, or blow your nose
  2. After you use the restroom
  3. After you handle money, or pets
  4. Before and after you eat or handle food
  5. When your hands look or feel dirty
  6. After school

To eliminate germs, you must wash your hands correctly.  Follow these steps to ensure the germs are off your hands:

  1. Wet your hands with water
  2. Use soap (germs WILL NOT come off hands without soap!!)
  3. Lather for 20 seconds, sing the Happy Birthday song or the ABC song. First wash palm to palm, then wash palm to back, then wash your finger webs, then wash palm to knuckles and finger tips, then wash your thumb, and finally wash your wrists.
  4. Rinse the soap off of your hands
  5. Dry your hands using a towel or paper towel.  Turn off the water with the towel.

Sometimes it is not possible to wash your hands with soap and water.  Studies have shown that hand sanitizers can kill up to 99.9% of germs if used correctly. You will not be able to stop every germ from entering your body, but washing your hands regularly and not touching your face with your hands while at school will help prevent many colds and viruses.
