Fourth grade students have pen pals in the Dominican Republic. Jamie Haller, a former Fenton counselor now with the Peace Corps, has helped us with the process. Jamie is working as a teacher in a small community in the mountains and has started an English Club, with whom we will be corresponding.

Each of our fourth graders will be writing letters in Spanish to our new friends. Throughout the school year, students will write about day to day activities, celebrations, traditions of our state and season. We will also be exchanging recipes. In the first letters, students will introduced themselves, share their likes, dislikes, and favorite things to do. I am happy to help students forge friendships across the sea.

Nurse's Notes

We all are busy, and this is a good time to remind ourselves how important our families are to us. A great way to show your children how much you care is to have dinner as a family. Having dinner together is a great way to know what is going at school, who is your child’s best friend, what book your child is reading, etc. There are many advantages to eating as a family. Here are a few:

  1. Children of families who eat together do better in school.
  2. Children of families who eat together get along better with other children.
  3. Children of families who eat together eat more nutritious meals.
  4. Eating together teaches family traditions and builds stronger families.
  5. Eating together teaches dinning etiquette.
  6. Eating together saves money.
  7. Family meals are a great time to practice family values and spiritual beliefs.

We all find ourselves busy, but eating together is a great way to have family time. The meal does not have to be fancy. If you have to, turn off the phone and the TV. Talk about what went on during the day. The important thng is to spend time together as a family.
