Betsy DeVos and the Wrong Way to Fix Schools
By Douglas N. Harris, The New York Times

NEW ORLEANS — President-elect Donald J. Trump’s selection of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education has sent shock waves through the educational establishment. Understandably so, since this is a clear sign that Mr. Trump intends a major national push to direct public funds to private and charter schools. But this is more than just a political or financial loss for traditional public schools. It will also most likely be a loss for students. Click here to read the full article.

Dear Parents,

Voces Poéticas time is here!  Voces Poéticas is  an annual poetry recital competition sponsored by The Spanish Center of Resources in partnership with the Division of History and Literary Arts at the Hispanic Cultural Center. We are very excited that our students have the opportunity to use the Spanish language to express and present a poem to an audience. All students who participate gain confidence, improve their interpretational and presentational skills.

The sponsors of this event, have informed us of a few changes for the 2017 competition. One of the changes being we will only be able to take one student representative for each grade level, a total of five students.

In the past, students have been judge based on:

Creative ability and originality - Does the participant pronounce, dramatize and convey the main idea of the poem?
Accuracy and enunciation - Does the participant pronounce the words clearly and correctly?
Communication with the audience - Does the participant engage the audience and make eye contact?
Projection and voice level - Does the participant reasonably project his or her voice level?

This area has been added this year:
Latin American and Iberian Culture and History - Does the poem highlight or reference culture and history?

The changes will allow more schools to participate and each poem will encourage a deeper cultural and historical understanding.

To select the Manzano Day School’s representatives, an in-school competition will be held. All students who are interested in participating select a poem from a pool of poems pre-selected by their Spanish teacher. Selected poems and a detailed letter with information about practice dates and times is sent home with the students who express desire to compete the second week in December.

If you have any questions about this event and your child is in first grade please, contact Señora Lupita at lkendall@manzanodayschool.org.

If your student is in second, third, fourth or fifth grade contact Señora Balkins at cbalkins@manzanodayschool.org.

Sincerely,
Señora Lupita and Señora Balkins

Nurse's Notes

The USDA considers all foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds, part of the Protein Food Group. As discussed in the previous Vegetable Food Group articles, beans and peas are also part of the Vegetable Group. They are excellent sources of dietary fiber and nutrients such as folate and potassium. Beans and peas are also an excellent source of plant protein, and provide other nutrients such as iron and zinc, so they are also considered part of the Protein Group.

The USDA recommends selecting a variety of protein foods to improve nutrient intake and health benefits, including at least 8 ounces of cooked seafood per week.  Vegetarian options in the Protein Foods Group include beans and peas, processed soy products, and nuts and seeds. Meat and poultry choices should be lean or low-fat.

Some commonly eaten choices in the Protein Food Group are:

  • Meats: beef, ham, lamb, pork, and veal
  • Game Meats: bison, rabbit, and venison
  • Poultry: chicken, duck, and turkey
  • Eggs: chicken or duck eggs
  • Beans and Peas:  black beans, black-eyed peas, kidney beans, lentils, and pinto beans
  • Processed soy products: tofu, white beans, bean burgers
  • Nuts and Seeds: almonds, cashews, mixed nuts, pumpkin seeds and peanuts
  • Seafood: catfish, cod, halibut, salmon, sea bass, and swordfish
  • Shellfish: clams, crab, lobster, mussels, scallops, and shrimp
  • Canned fish: anchovies, clams, tuna, and sardines

The USDA encourages choosing lean or low fat meats and poultry, seafood, such as salmon, that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, and eating processed meats that are low in added sodium.  Next week we will discuss why protein is important and how many ounces of protein are recommend.
