Nurse's Notes

The Dairy Food Group

The USDA considers all fluid milk products and many foods made from milk part of the Dairy Group.  Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Some commonly eaten food choices in the Dairy Group are: milk, cheese, yogurt, calcium-fortified soymilk, and milk-based desserts such as ice cream and pudding.  Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter are not considered part of the Dairy Group.

Consuming dairy products provides many health benefits including improved bone health, and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Foods in the Dairy Group provide nutrients that are vital for our body's health. These nutrients include: calcium for building healthy bones and teeth, potassium for maintaining healthy blood pressure, vitamin D which helps maintain proper levels of calcium and phosphorous, and protein.

The USDA considers one cup of milk or yogurt, 1 ½ ounce of natural cheese, or 2 ounces of processed cheese one service of the Dairy Group.  The USDA recommends that most Dairy Group choices should be fat-free or low-fat to reduce "bad" cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins (LDL). For more information on foods in the Dairy Group, including recipes, visit ChooseMyPlate.gov.

Below is a graph demonstrating how many cups of dairy we should be eating each day:
