Clubs & Organizations
Chess Club meets after school on Mondays and is open to students in second through fifth grade who are interested in improving their knowledge of chess, and who enjoy playing both for friendly competition and for fun. Manzano Day School students compete in the Albuquerque Schools Chess League against students from other independent schools as well as area public schools and students who are home schooled. The league sponsors six tournaments each school year, which are typically scheduled from October through March. The tournaments take place during evening hours at different sites around the Albuquerque metro area. Please contact Leanne Kimbrough for more information at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Garden Club meets every Wednesday morning in the fall from 7:30 - 8:15, during the months of September through November and in the spring from March through May. Garden Club is open to students from kindergarten through fifth grade, parents, teachers, and staff. Participants meet in the Peterson Learning Center at 7:30 in the morning before going to the garden.
A word of warning: growing your own seasonal vegetables is not only very addictive; it will also completely change your attitude towards the food you eat.
Good Apple Singers
Good Apple Singers is an ensemble singing group for fourth and fifth graders who wish to have more experience performing. A variety of music is learned and performed, including upbeat, choreographed numbers. Rehearsals are held on Mondays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 7:45 - 8:25 a.m. Students are welcome to “try out” the ensemble for two weeks before making a commitment to join.
Jump Rope Club
Jump Rope Club is an after school club that meets in the gym from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. The club is open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Jump Rope Club is a fun and active way for students to move and learn basic jump rope skills. Students also have the opportunity to try out for the Red Hot Pepper Jump Rope Team. The Red Hot Pepper Jump Rope Team meets on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. Students learn more advanced jump rope techniques, and also participate in performances at local schools and in the Albuquerque community.
Math Olympiads is an after school club for third, fourth and fifth graders, which is designed to be intellectually challenging, stimulating, and fast-paced. At each meeting, mathletes explore a math topic or strategy. Meetings begin in September in order to prepare everyone for five monthly competitions that begin in November. Math Olympiads meets on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.
One team of no more that 35 third, fourth, and fifth graders participates in the national competition. Five monthly contests take place from November to March. No traveling is required!
Robotics Club is open to students in fourth and fifth grade. Students use the Lego Mindstorms products to build and program robots. Robotics Club will meet on Wednesdays from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. in the Science Lab. Registration is required and can be completed on Science Coordinator Stephanie Dobbie’s class page.
Science Club is for students in kindergarten through third grade. Students participate in a variety of age-appropriate science investigations as well as engineering activities. Two 10-week sessions are offered in the fall and winter/spring. Science Club will meet on Mondays from 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. in the Science Lab. Yearbook Club is open to fifth grade students and meets during school hours once per six-day rotation. Yearbook Club students are involved in all aspects of creating and publishing the yearbook. They do everything from choosing a theme, to taking photographs, to page layout, and editing. Students join at the beginning of the school year and finish the yearbook in March.
