Nurse's Notes: Tips for Traveling with Children

Traveling with children can be both fun and exhausting. Here are a few trips to help you make your trip as enjoyable as possible.

  1. How are you getting there? Are you taking a plane, driving, taking a bus or taking the train? Don't forget your travel documents. Do you need to get a passport for your child? Also, plan activities to keep them busy. A coloring book, books on tape, a map so the kids can follow along on the journey, movies (a new movie that they haven't seen before is a bonus!), and games. Bring things that your child likes to do. Snacks can also be another distraction when traveling. Healthy snacks are best as you don't want to get your kids sugared up before a long trip. With the hustle and bustle of travel, we sometimes forget to drink water which can lead to dehydration.
  2. Where are you going to stay? Do you need to bring or buy food when you get there? Is it an all-inclusive resort?
  3. Plan on what you are going to do. Try to keep your kids busy on your trip. Make sure you have appropriate clothing for your activities and be prepared for the climate. A swim suit, sunscreen, and flip flops if you are at the beach and hiking boots if you are planning on hiking.
  4. Don't forget medications and bug spray. Motion sickness medication is helpful in preventing nausea, vomiting, dizziness and queasiness. Even if your child is not on medications pack a first-aid kit for all those boo-boos and don't forget those just in case medications such as Tylenol or Motrin. Don't forget your insurance card just in case of an emergency.

Most importantly enjoy the family time and have fun.
