It is time for the annual Turkey Trot - Thursday, November 15. This event is for students, faculty, staff, and family! The goal is to walk, run, jog or trot your way around the track to complete as many laps as possible! Much of the event this year will remain the same, but we will also be incorporating a toiletries and coat drive to benefit All Faiths. This is a great opportunity to discuss the benefits of active fitness as well as giving back. Please see the outline below on relevant event aspects. The success of this event depends largely on parent volunteers to help set up, mark wristbands, tally laps and cheer on participants. Please consider volunteering for this fun event by clicking here.

Next week, November 12 through November 15, there will be large bins placed throughout campus for the purposes of collecting donations for children using the services of All Faiths. This community service is being coordinated in conjunction with Manzano Day School Girl Scout troop 10460. The Girl Scouts are asking for donations of everyday toiletries like soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo etc. One of the many dollar stores in town is a great place to pick up a large amount of these items for minimal cost. Thank you for your support!

Physiologically, kids need snacks. Their stomachs are small; they are constantly growing and usually quite active. When kids get too hungry, they may become cranky and find it hard to concentrate. Also, snacking is a good way for kids to meet their quota for vegetable and fruit servings per day.

What is a healthy snack? A healthy snack is rich in nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water). The USDA Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy snack as one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products. Snacks should also be low in trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars.

So what are some examples of healthy snacks?

· Fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, mangos, and bananas

· Hummus and vegetables such as carrots, peppers, or celery

· Cheese and whole wheat crackers

· Dried fruit such as raisins

· Yogurt and unsweetened granola and/or fruit

· Carrot, zucchini or banana breads or muffins

· Non-microwave popcorn

· String cheese with fruit or pretzels/crackers

· Guacamole and tortilla or pita chips

· Rice cakes

· Bagels or tortilla’s

When bringing in a class snack remember to ask your child’s teacher about allergies in the classroom or other classroom actives the day you plan to bring in your snack.

Remember healthy snacking leads to healthier kids!

Cold mornings and warm afternoons create overflowing lost and found bins. Please check the lost and found bins the next time you are on campus. Bins are kept around campus for large items, i.e., jackets, sweaters, hats, lunchboxes, etc. Smaller items, i.e. jewelry, watches, cash, keys, etc. are kept in the Front Office.

Lost and found items will be hung in the Meadow and under the Blue Tent during Parent/Teacher Conference week - November 12 - November 16. On Friday, November 16, any unclaimed items will be donated to Horizons.

If you have a child who is a sibling (new to Manzano Day School) who will be applying for the 2019-2020 school year, we need your completed application and parent questionnaire along with the $80.00 application fee. If you want your child’s admission file to be in the “sibling preference pool” (please see your Family Handbook, page 33) you must have his/her admission paperwork, as stated in the Handbook, completed by Saturday, December 15.

If you have questions, please stop by and see Madonna or Karroll, or call either one of us at 243-6659.
