What Is a Good School?

If someone tells me that a school is good, I tend not to believe it. It's not that I won't believe it, or that I therefore assume that the school is not good. It's just that I like to withhold judgment until I see some evidence (a habit that I hope we instill in our students as well).

Friday, December 7, is the deadline to turn in the parent permission form and enroll in the annual contest: Voces Poéticas. Without a signed permission form your child will not be able to participate. This event is sponsored by the Spanish Center of resources in partnership with the division of history & literary arts at the Hispanic Cultural Center. Practices with Señora Lupita and Maestro Palomares will be held during the months of January and February 2019. And our in-school competition to select a student from each grade for the city-wide-event will take place in March, 2019. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are the basis of Federal nutrition policy and educational activities. The Dietary Guidelines are issued and updated every 5 years by the Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS). They provide authoritative advice for Americans 2 years old and older about the amount of calories Americans consume, making healthy food choices, and being physically active to attain and maintain a healthy weight, reduce risk of chronic disease, and promoting overall health. In January 2011 the USDA released their new guidelines.

You might be asking yourself what is a “healthy diet? As in the past, the USDA Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that:

• Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products.
• Encourages lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts.
• Includes a diet low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

The new Dietary Guidelines uses the MyPlate as an illustration to demonstrate proper portion sizes to help us:

• Make smart choices from all food groups.
• Find a balance between food and physical activity.
• Get the most nutrition value out of our food choices.
• Stay within recommended daily caloric needs.

If you have a child who is a sibling (new to Manzano Day School) who will be applying for the 2019-2020 school year, we need your completed application and parent questionnaire along with the $80.00 application fee. If you want your child’s admission file to be in the “sibling preference pool” (please see your Family Handbook, page 33) you must have his/her admission paperwork, as stated in the Handbook, completed by Saturday, December 15.
